Building managers, engineers, and owners are under increasing pressure to save energy and comply with more stringent environmental standards. This, in turn, requires ever-increasing amounts energy consumption data and associated analytics. The concept of virtual metering is not new. Virtual meters allow engineers to estimate energy consumption on devices without purchasing and installing a physical meter but instead use calculated estimates. However, recent advances in big data and analytics bring an unprecedented level of accuracy and sophistication to virtual meters. This presentation explores several techniques for optimizing virtual meter estimation. This includes optimal placement of physical meters, optimal estimation of virtual meter data as well as how to use virtual meter data for tenant billing.
